It's sort of a Treemap
crossed with a Sunburst
. The Weighted Sunburst shows a hierarchy from inner to outer arcs. Those area encodes an element-specific value, e.g. size, child count, cost or something like that. In order to make the topology more visible, levels are colored by an even/odd pattern.
Elements on lower levels of large hierarchies are quite small in common Sunbursts. This is not the case in a Weighted Sunburst. As there's an additional attribute encoded, important elements on lower levels stand out because of their length. A drawback on the other hand is the increased size of the Sunburst. This visualization approach is therefore problably best suited for rather broad but flat hierarchies.
